SPANISH ECLIPSE

Elsewhere in the world, the focus has been on the Ring of Fire Eclipse and from where, the annular eclipse could best be seen; however, in Spain this weekend, there was a different kind of "Eclipse" at the 2023 Spanish Nationals! In Class 10, for stallions ages 7 - 10 years (he enters the ring @11:14), we find the Eclipse son, Piropo D.Y., out of Fabiana (Ramalazo x Trailla), while in Class 11, for stallions ages 11 and older, we find last year's AECCA Gold Champion, Lanceador, a 2011 chestnut son of Eclipse (he is the first stallion shown @3:05). His dam, Ukola, is sired by Olimpico, a son of Heleno, who also sired Titanic, the sire of Eclipse! While Lanceador's genetic background reflects the bloodline choices available to Spanish breeders, once the National Studbook was closed, Piropo's dam was sired by Ramalazo, a son of Shafeek, a Shaker El Masri grandson out of Silver Starlet, an *Essaul (Comet) daughter, out of a *Silver Drift daughter. The high white on Piropo stood out to me and sure enough, his matriline traces back to Rodania, one of the most powerful and enduring mare lines in our breed! Plus, the sire line for both stallions traces to Seanderich, a 1902 Saqlawi stallion, imported from Istanbul in 1908, who founded one of two major sire lines in Spanish Arabian horse breeding.

Felicidades to Yeguada Domecq Ybarra, the breeder of  both Piropo D.Y. and Lanceador!  Saludo to the owner of Lanceador, Yeguada Jose Ruiz El Soldao.
