*Saba El Zahraa++

*Saba El Zahraa (*Morafic x *Salomy), photographer unknown

In 1962, the Marshalls imported 5 mares from Egypt. *Salomy, an El Sareei daughter out of Malaka (Kheir x Bint Bint Riyala) was one of the 5 and was in foal to *Morafic (Nazeer x Mabrouka). The following year, she foaled a colt, whom the Marshalls named *Saba El Zahraa.

When Moniet el Nefous was bred to El Sareei, she produced *Tuhotmos in 1962. Its interesting to find these 2 horses reunited in the pedigree of *Saba El Zahraa, with the added influence of the Rodania matriline, one of the most influential mare families in the breed, plus Nazeer, Sid Abouhom and the RAS racehorse, Kheir. The other interesting point is the placement of these 2 horses within the pedigree, as compared to *Tuhotmos. Moniet el Nefous, via her Sid Abouhom daughter, Mabrouka, is found on the sire side of the pedigree, while El Sareei comes by way of the dam side, through *Salomy, the dam of *Saba El Zahraa.

At the time that *Saba El Zahraa was foaled, the Gleannloch straight Egyptian breeding program was in its infancy. I wonder if the Marshalls realized how important this particular horse could have been to their program? They decided to sell him and unfortunately, *Saba El Zahraa was primarily bred to domestic mares, purebreds who reflected the bloodlines that were popular and readily available in America, before the importations from other countries began. That's where we will find the majority of his influence today.  Why do I use the word, "important" in the same sentence with *Saba El Zahraa? His dam, *Salomy, who was a great producer of breeding stock. She was bred to *Moftakhar and produced the super broodmare, Il Mandil. This combination also unites the two branches of the Rodania matriline in straight Egyptian breeding: Bint Riyala (through Malaka) and Bint Rissala (through Kateefa). When Il Mandil was bred back to Moniet el Nefous via *Soufian, the important broodmare, Moniet Il Mandil was foaled. She went on to produce a record number of daughters like Egyptian Charm, Egyptian Belle, Egyptian Dream, Egyptian Melody and Egyptian Rasmona among others.  When Il Mandil was bred to *Morafic, she produced Moradil, also a star broodmare who produced Faras Azali by Fehris (*Morafic x *Kahramana), whose grandaughter, Bint Faras Azali was an important mare for Ansata. On a weekend like Memorial Day, when we remember the sacrifices of so many, I find myself wondering over *Saba El Zahraa and the age old question, which can be applied to so many horses:  what if he had been used similarly within the straight Egyptian population in his time?

***Many thanks to Debbie Courtney from the Gleannloch Facebook fan page, who recently posted a bunch of photos of the horse, including the one above. You gave me so much to think about and this Saba El Zahraa blog would not exist, if it were not for you**
