Ezz Al Rashediah

The most interesting thing that I can tell you about Ezz Al Rashediah happens so quickly in the above Arabian Essence video, that if you aren't paying close attention, you will miss it! Starting at approx -1.58 and ending at -1.55, you will witness Ezz Al Rashediah morph into his sire, Ansata Nile Echo for a few strides! Ezz Al Rashediah is a 2014 grey stallion, bred by Mr. Rashid Abdul Rahman Al Jasmi of Al Rashediah Stud in Bahrain. Sired by Ansata Nile Echo, Ezz Al Rashediah and Naseem Al Rashediah are maternal siblings; as both stallions are out of Nabaweyah Ezzain (Ansata AlMurtajiz x NK Nakeebya). However, the two stallions are genetically closer than maternal siblings, as both horses enjoy the presence of Ansata Halim Shah via the sire line. In Ezz Al Rashediah, his sire is a grandson of Ansata Halim Shah; while Naseem's sire, Al Adeed Al Shaqab is a son. It really comes down to the  dams of Al Adeed Al Shaqab (Sundar Alisayyah) and Ansata Nile Echo (Ansata White Nile)  to establish the difference between the two horses. Ansata White Nile is a balanced blending of old Egyptian lines (Fada and Fa-Habba, via the Babson breeding program, founded on the horses imported from Egypt in 1932), as well as the Dahman and Saqlawi strains, as found within the Ansata breeding program. Sundar Alisayyah, on the other hand, is representative of the blending of the Kuhaylan Rodan strain, with that of a Hadban tail female line (as found in the Albadeia and EAO breeding programs), while adding a touch of the Abeyyan strain (Ruminaja Ali via his maternal granddam, *Magidaa) for that extra bit of sparkle. In studying the maternal lines, you will better understand how to utilize the genetic influence of each horse best. It's not that one stallion is better than the other, because really, the horses are more similar, than they are different. It's the unique "flavor" that each horse offers, that may complement one program, over another.

*GWALIOR

The Gladys Brown Edwards painting of *Gwalior (*Nabor x Gwadiana)

Today is *Gwalior's birthday. He was born on February 19, 1961. If the lifespan of horses was as long-lived as a human's life, *Gwalior would be 61 years old today. Bred by Michalów Stud of Poland and like *Aramus, Espartero, Dardir, Gwiazdor and Faraon, *Gwalior was considered to be one of *Nabor's best sons. His dam was the mare, Gwadiana, an Amurath Sahib daughter  out of the Janow Podlaski-bred mare, Gwara, by Wielki Szlem, an important broodmatron within the Klemensow breeding program.

To better understand *Gwalior, one needs to also understand the efforts of two men in particular, who exercised a  significant impact upon the breeding program which resulted in his creation.  After WWII, Dr. Edward Skorkowski was part of a horse breeding  committee, whose main focus was to evaluate the horses remaining in Poland. The doctor separated the horses by genotype and phenotype, sending the horses he designated as Saqlawi, to Klemensow, a stud farm founded in 1947. Less than 5 years later, Dr. Ignacy Jaworowski was appointed Director and moved the stud farm from the estate previously owned by the Zamojski family, to a new location.  However, the breeding philosophy for which Klemensow was recognized for, did not change. Michalów was committed to perpetuating the excellence that Klemensow had achieved and focused on breeding a Saqlawi-type horse, much like *Gwalior. So, one can say that *Gwalior was a result of the shared vision between these two men: Dr. Skorkowski and Dr. Jaworowski.

*Gwalior was imported to America in 1966 by Lasma Arabians. Strikingly beautiful, *Gwalior was pure-in-strain Saqlawi, as the tail female line of both his sire and dam trace back to Saqlawi mares, as designated by Dr. Skorkowski. An accomplished show horse with an overwhelming amount of appeal, *Gwalior was named the Scottsdale Champion Stallion in 1967, a year after his importation. *Gwalior repeated that win in 1968 and then again, in 1969; which also happens to be the year in which *Gwalior became a US Reserve National Champion Stallion for the very first time. It was a spectacularly large class, with 64 other stallions competing for the title. In the top ten were the straight Egyptian stallions: *Ansata Ibn Halima, a 1966 and 1967 US Top Ten stallion and his son, Ansata Ibn Sudan (out of *Ansata Bint Mabrouka).  In 1970, *Gwalior would return to the US National stage, once again earning the Reserve National Champion title. However, the story gets even more exciting the following year, as both Ansata Ibn Sudan and *Gwalior returned to the US National Show arena, ready to do battle  and emerge victorious, as national champions. For *Gwalior, fresh off his Canadian National Champion Stallion win, it was his chance, possibly his last, to finally claim what he believed was rightfully his, the elusive National Champion Stallion title. Ansata Ibn Sudan, on the other hand, having previously campaigned for the title in 1969, would further establish *Ansata Ibn Halima as a sire of champions. Among the 83 stallions competing in the class were the paternal siblings, *Ibn Moniet el Nefous and *Refky, both horses sired by *Morafic. When the cheers and the ring dust settled, Ansata Ibn Sudan emerged as the Champion Stallion, while *Gwalior added the first of what would be two Reserve National Championships earned that year. *Gwalior, as a highly favored and much admired representative of the breed standard, is part of a very select group of horses, that is, individuals who win National titles in both halter and performance. *Gwalior was also named a US Reserve National Champion Park Horse in 1971. *Gwalior would move from the spotlight of the arena to that of the breeding shed. Over the course of his breeding career, he would sire 287 foals, proving the accuracy of the program created by Dr. Edward Skorkowski and Dr. Ignacy Jaworowski to breed an authentic horse, sound of body, mind and spirit, while furthering the influence of the Polish Arabian horse.

Maisa Al Nasser @ Katara!

You can't imagine my happiness today, to have discovered the video footage of this wonderful  mare, competing at the 2022 Katara International Arabian Horse Festival. She was shown in class 9, for 11-year old and older mares. With a score of 92.44, she earned a 2nd place, behind Nada Al Shahania (Besson Carol x MFA Annie's Song). Maisa Al Nasser advanced to today's Senior Mare finals, earning the Bronze Championship. The Gold Championship was given to Donna Molta Bella SRA (DA Valentino x RD Fabreanna) and the Silver went to Nada Al Shahania. Maisa Al Nasser's win is made even more significant,  as her son, Nhaar Al Nasser, by Ansata Nile Echo, won his class in last week's Katara Arabian Peninsula show.  It reminds me of  the time when *Ansata Ibn Halima and Ansata Ibn Sudan, both horses showing within the same stallion halter class (1969 US National show) and each chosen a top ten stallion. This of course puts Maisa Al Nasser in a special category, that of an elite mare: a top show mare AND a proven broodmare of champions. Her embryo was sold at the Katara auction earlier this week and I am jealous over the opportunity that someone now has to incorporate this most wonderful of all modern mares into their program. I only wish it were me.

Sameh Al Waab: An Unexpected Surprise

Sameh Al Waab is a 2017 son of Sinan Al Rayyan and out of Sobh Al Rayyan (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Selma Al Rayyan). Sameh Al Waab was bred by Sheikh Abdulla Khalid Al Thani and is now owned by Al Obayyah Stud. Sameh Al Waab was also shown this past weekend at the 2022 Katara International Arabian Peninsula show, in class 10B, 4 - 6 year old stallions, earning a score of 90.06, which earned him 6th place.

Sameh Al Waab is substantial, and although not a tall horse, he is powerfully built.  Close-coupled with depth to his heart girth, broad through the chest, a good neck set and strong hind end are some of his outstanding qualities. For me, these are the conformational attributes that made him stand out amongst the many  thumbnail choices on You Tube, prompting me to click and watch his video.

Dahman by strain, his pedigree is also overwhelmingly Dahman, as more of his ancestors are of this strain, approximately 53%. The balance is shared almost equally by horses of the Saqlawi and Abeyyan strains, with a small touch of the Hadban Enzahi strain. A deeper look at the pedigree reveals the interesting manner in which he has been bred, as his sire is a maternal grandson of Ansata Sharifa (Ansata ibn Shah x Ansata Samantha), while his dam is a maternal great-grandaughter. Combined, Ansata Sharifa represents 18.75% of the pedigree. Also, in the 3rd generation, another interesting cross occurs, that of paternal siblings (Al Wajba Al Rayyan on the paternal side and Ashhal Al Rayyan on the maternal side). Together, they bump up the percentage of Safir (Salaa El Dine x Aisha) to 25%.  Ansata Halim Shah also exerts a larger percentage of genetic influence, through the 7 lines that trace back to him, a total percentage of influence at approximately 31.25%. These 3 horses together: Ansata Sharifa, Safir and Ansata Halim Shah represent 75% of the influence  in Sameh Al Waab's pedigree!

Nhaar Al Nasser

Nhaar Al Nasser, bred and owned by Sheikh Nawaf Bin Nasser Al Thani of Al Nasser Stud, is a 2016 son of Maisa Al Nasser (Sinan Al Rayyan x Zenubia Al Nasser) and sired by Ansata Nile Echo (Ansata Hejazi x Ansata White Nile). At the 2022 Katara International Arabian Peninsula show held over the past weekend, Nhaar Al Nasser won Class 10B, 4 - 6 year old stallions, which advanced him to the Senior Stallion Championships, winning Bronze distinction.

Maisa Al Nasser, the 2019 Bronze World  Champion senior mare, no matter how many years pass, remains unforgettable, since "discovering" her at the Menton show, when during the course of her presentation, she slipped and fell. From that point, through the rest of the summer and fall, leading right up to the World Championships, it was exciting to follow Maisa, win-after-win. For me, her performance in Menton was inspiring and also, a great life lesson. Sometimes, when life knocks us down, we need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and start all over again, just as Maisa did all those years ago. And now, here we are, speaking about this wonderful mare's son and his exciting performance at the Katara show! One can only dream over the possibilities, as Nhaar furthers the legacy of his dam in ways that I could not imagine, as I watched her compete way back in 2019!

Maisa Al Nasser is out of Zenubia Al Nasser, by Imperial Mahzeer (Imperial Madheen x Maar Bilahhh) and out of Imperial Sanama (*Ibn Safinaz x Imperial Imalana), through whom, we find a very interesting Saklawi tail female line. Imperial Imalana is a daughter of a strong-bodied 1974 bay mare named *Amalaa, herself a daughter of an AlBadeia-bred mare named Aminaa, by Ibn Maisa (Nazeer x Maisa) and out of Rabiaa (Beshier x Rateeba), a 1951 chestnut Inshass-bred mare. *Amalaa's sire, Mowaffac was a *Ramses Fayek son out of a mare named Ayda, a Nazeer daughter out of Lateefa (Gamil III x Salwa).

With 3 sons (Nabeel Al Rayyan, Bashir Al Rayyan & Mountaser Laffan) showing in the 7 - 10 year old class, 2 daughters (Gharafa Al Shaqab & Juhayna Al Nasser placing 2nd & 3rd repectively) in the 4 - 6 year old class, 1 daughter (Mashhorah Al Shaqab who placed 2nd) in the 7 - 10 year old class and Nhaar showing in the 4 - 6 stallion class, Ansata Nile Echo (Ansata Hejazi x Ansata White Nile), continues to exert a significant influence within straight Egyptian breeding, five years after his passing.

The cross of Ansata Nile Echo with Maisa Al Nasser, reminds me of another horse, an Imperial-bred mare named Imperial Janaabah (Imperial Jasim x Imperial Fanniya), who was bred to Imperial Kamill (Imperial Al Kamar x Imperial Mistilll). This cross, is somewhat similar to the Ansata Nile Echo/Maisa Al Nasser cross, which combines the dam line of *Amalaa (dam line of Imperial Jasim), with the dam line of the Ansata Nile horses (dam line of Imperial Mistill and Ansata Nile Echo). In 1999, the cross of Janaabah and Kamilll produced Sahra Janilla for American breeder, Marian White. Sahra Janilla was then bred to Imperial Baarez, producing 2 daughters: Imperial Batteeka who was bred to Thee Desperado, Justynn and *Mishaal HP for Ahmad E. Amer and  Imperial Baassarah who was bred to ImperialAmirKamar for Eastern Star Arabians. Through these two Imperial-prefixed mares, the blending of *Amalaa with the Ansata Nile family of horses remains very relevant today. In 20 or so years, we hope to be speaking of Nhaar Al Nasser and his get, in the same way we speak of horses like Imperial Im Jasim, Imperial Kamilll and Sahra Janilla.

The Superstar at Katara

Naseem Al Rashediah was shown this weekend at the 2022 Katara International Arabian Peninsula show. He won Class 11 for 7 - 10 years old stallions, advancing to the Senior Stallion Championships, which he also won, earning the top spot on all 10 judges' cards!

Naseem Al Rashediah is a 2014 grey stallion, bred by Mr. Rashid Abdul Rahman Al Jasmi of Al Rashediah Stud in Bahrain and now owned by Sheikh Thani Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani.  Naseem is by the late Al Adeed Al Shaqab (Ansata Halim Shah x Sundar Alisayyah) and out of  Nabaweyah Ezzain (Ansata AlMurtajiz x NK Nakeebya), a bay mare bred by the late Mr. Usamah Alkazemi of Ezzain Arabians in Kuwait.

Although in phenotype, Naseem Al Rashediah resembles a Saqlawi strain horse, he is a pure-in-the-strain Hadban Enzahi stallion, as both Al Adeed Al Shaqab and Nabaweyah Ezzain trace in their tail female lines to Venus, an 1890 chestnut mare imported into Egypt for Khedive Abbas II. What's interesting is how these sources of Hadban blood are combined in one horse, as through Al Adeed, the source of Venus runs through the AlBadeia breeding program and is brought forward by Imperial Egyptian Stud.  While through Nabaweyah Ezzain, we see the Venus source run through Dr. Nagel's Katharinenhof breeding program and is brought forward via the Ezzain breeding program

I know that some enthusiasts will scoff at the pure-in-the-strain designation, however, when you look deeper, that's how you will discover that the strain designation is further strengthened with every line to Nazeer (Mansour x Bint Samiha), which is also a line to Venus. Between sire and dam, there are approximately 63 lines (give or take) to Nazeer! Not to mention that the stallion, Madkour, brings in more Venus blood (through Kamla) and the stallion, Nejdy, brings another line to Venus through Lotfeia. If I add all the sources of Venus blood, through Nazeer and Kamla, there are approximately 66 lines to Venus! I found it interesting to learn that the reason the strain is called "Hadban" is because of the forelock and mane, which is so profuse, that it covers the forehead or face of the horse. Naseem Al Rashediah is groomed for the show ring and the forelock, while long of hair strand, is not as profuse as the original Hadba may have been.

I have written many blogs over the last few years about this horse and today, I celebrate the continuing influence this stallion is exerting within the straight Egyptian community, while furthering the legacy of Al Adeed Al Shaqab.

Congratulations to both Mr. Rashid Abdul Rahman Al Jasmi  and Sheikh Thani Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani on Naseem Al Rashediah's significant win.

Nawaal@Katara!

At first, I thought an older video was uploaded to Arabian Essence's You Tube channel by mistake. Nawaal Al Rayyan? I think one of the last videos that I remember watching of her compete was from Nawaal's 2019 Gold Champion win at the Straight Egyptian World Championships in Milan. And here she is, this weekend, at the 2022 Katara International Arabian Peninsula show! You can't imagine the surprise and happiness I felt when I realized this was no old video!  I have been watching this particular mare since she came to America and was shown in the 2015 Egyptian Event. She was named the Gold Champion Junior Filly and Most Classic Head Junior Filly. She impressed me back then, as she was breathtaking, a classic type of Arabian horse that not so long ago, was more common in the USA than it is today. I still feel the same way about her.

So, maybe you are new to all of this and you don't understand my enthusiasm for this mare. Who is she, you might be asking yourself right about now. Well dear reader, let me tell you a story about Nawaal Al Rayyan.

Nawaal is sired by Ansata Sokar (Imperial Madheen x Ansata Samantha) and out of Nadrah Al Rayyan (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Ansata Nefer Isis). In studying Nawaal's tail female line (which is the same tail female line of Nabeel Al Rayyan, who was shown in the 7 - 10 year old stallion class), you will find Ansata Nefertiti by Ansata Halim Shah and out of Ansata Sudarra. She is not only Nawaal's great granddam; she is also Ansata Hejazi's full sister. She was bred to Prince Fa Moniet to produce the beloved mare, Ansata Nefer Isis, who in turn was bred to Ashhal Al Rayyan (Safir x Ansata Majesta) which resulted in Nawaal's dam, Nadrah Al Rayyan. Sheikh Hamad said,
"The Ashhal Al Rayyan daughters inherit his classic aura and have proven to be excellent producers."
What is also interesting about this tail female line (which goes back to *Ansata Bint Bukra through her Sameh daughter, *Ansata Bint Misr) is that it is doubled, meaning, it is the same tail female line for the sire, as it is for the dam. Ansata Sudarra and Ansata Samantha were maternal siblings, both mares are daughters of Ansata Delilah (Ansata Shah Zaman x Ansata Bint Misr), sired by different stallions. Ansata Samantha is by *Ansata Ibn Halima, while Ansata Sudarra is by Ansata Abu Sudan.

Imperial Madheen, the sire of Ansata Sokar, is a son of the German-bred stallion, Messaoud (Madkour x Maymoonah), while Ashhal Al Rayyan is a maternal great grandson of JKB Masouda, who incidentally, is a full sister of Messaoud! This influence represents 30% of the pedigree!

There's an old saying, which says, "the third time's the charm." And in this case, it is the doubling of Ansata Halim Shah (*Ansata Ibn Halima x Ansata Rosetta), the sire of Ansata Majesta (x Ansata Malika) and Ansata Nefertiti (x Ansata Sudarra). Both mares appear on the maternal side of the pedigree, as great granddams.

Nawaal is strong of body, correct, with an equal distribution of her body mass, meaning, she has a powerful front end and an equally powerful hind end. One is not more massive than the other, in this day and age of front-end horses. She is smooth and her neck is beautiful, well set, flowing out of the wither and when it meets her head, it forms a very nice mitbah. She is not exotic or extreme, just clean and dry, a horse born of the desert.

Simeon Sebedee: Katara

Simeon Sebedee is a 2006 stallion, a son of Imperial Madaar (Imperial Madheen x Ansata Nile Mist) and out of the extraordinary chestnut mare, Simeon Sehavi (Asfour x Simeon Sheba). Bred by Marion Richmond of the world famous Simeon Stud, he is now owned by Al Aqeed Stud.  Simeon Sebedee is Hadban Enzahi by strain, tracing in his tail female line to Venus, the root mare of the strain. Including the matriline, approximately 40% of his pedigree is influenced by Hadban Enzahi-strain horses.
27 Ibn Galal V (Ibn Galal x 10 Hosna)

In Dr. Hans Nagel's newest book, The Arabian Horse: Nature's Creation and the Art of Breeding, Dr. Nagel underscores the significance of Simeon Sebedee's tail female line:
"Also, the Simeon Stud in Australia was fortunate to buy a first class mare from Babolna, 27 Ibn Galal V. Her sire was the imported Ibn Galal, bred to the Egyptian mare 'Hosna'. This liver chestnut mare was of outstanding quality, and without doubt, she was largely responsible for the world-wide success enjoyed by Simeon Stud particularly when she was mated to the Katharinenhof-sired Asfour (Malik x Hanan). "
This weekend, at the 2022 Katara International Arabian Peninsula show, Simeon Sebedee was shown in the very competitive Class 11, for 7 - 10 year old stallions.  The quality of the horses in this class was consistently spectacular and I don't envy the judges for the very challenging job they were assigned to do. Mr. Mohamed Machmoum, Mr. Sufian Taha AlHusseini,  Mr. Nashaat Hegazy, Mrs.  Kathleen Ohlsson, Mr. Khaled Al Mesbah Jassim, Mrs. Amira Safady, Mr.  Hassanain Al-Nakeeb, Mr. Fausto Scanzi, Mr. Christian Moschini and Mr. Murillo Kammer  included Simeon Sebedee in their top ten choices with a score of 89.84. Congratulations to Al Aqeed Stud for continuing to believe in this excellent stallion and to all, who like me love this horse!

***BREAKING NEWS*** Simeon Sebedee was lot 33 in yesterday's Katara Arabian Auction! Congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Hamad Mohammed Fa Al Hajri!

Katara, Ansata Nile Echo & The Mare That Once Was

This weekend, at the 2022 Katara International Arabian Peninsula Show, something very interesting occurred within Class 11, the 7 - 10 year old stallions. There were three sons of the late stallion, Ansata Nile Echo (Ansata Hejazi x Ansata White Nile), competing against the 8 other stallions (and each other):
  • Nabeel Al Rayyan (x Ansata Nefer Isis) - 6th place, with a score of 90.63
  • Bashir Al Rayyan (x G Shafaria) - 7th place, with a score of 90.06
  • Mountaser Laffan (x Authentic Monisa) - 9th place, with a score of 89.75
What's also interesting is the genetic similarity that exists between Nabeel and Bashir, as both stallions are out of Prince Fa Moniet (TheEgyptianPrince  x Fa Moniet) daughters, with tail female lines tracing back to *Ansata Bint Bukra, by way of *Ansata Bint Misr

Five generations is what separates both stallions from their maternal great-great-great grandam, *Ansata Bint Misr (Sameh x *Ansata Bint Bukra):
  • Nabeel->Ansata Nefer Isis->Ansata Nefertiti->Ansata Sudarra->Ansata Delilah->*Ansata Bint Misr
  • Bashir->G Shafaria->Ansata Sharifa->Ansata Samantha->Ansata Delilah->*Ansata Bint Misr

You need to study the differences which exist in the 4th and 5th generations, populated by the grandams and great-grandams. Nabeel's dam is out of the Ansata Halim Shah daughter, Ansata Nefertiti; while Bashir's dam is out of the Ansata Ibn Shah daughter, Ansata Sharifa. The great-grandams in both pedigrees represent the maternal super forces within the Ansata breeding program: Ansata Delilah vs. Ansata Samantha. Nabeel represents the path via the Ansata Abu Sudan daughter, Ansata Delilah, while Bashir is representative of the *Ansata Ibn Halima daughter, Ansata Samantha.

Ansata Nile Echo's dam, Ansata White Nile, was a Prince Fa Moniet daughter, out of Ansata Nile Gift. In combination with the dams of both Nabeel and Bashir, the influence of Prince Fa Moniet increases to almost 40% in each stallion! Also, Ansata Nile Echo, as a son of Ansata Hejazi (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Sudarra), further intensifies the influence of Ansata Halim Shah (also Nefertiti's sire) and Ansata Sudarra (also Nefertiti's dam) to 25% each, within Nabeel's pedigree. On the other hand, Bashir's percentage of influence remains at 12.5% for each horse. There is a certain sense of familiarity that struck me about Nabeel Al Rayyan and at first, I didn't understand. I felt that I had seen this horse before. Remember the gorgeous show mare from the 2019 show season, Nawaal Al Rayyan (Ansata Sokar x Nadrah Al Rayyan)? Nawaal showed on Friday in the second class for 7 - 10 year old mares, Class 8B and placed third, with a score of 92.07.  Nawaal's dam, Nadrah Al Rayyan and Nabeel Al Rayyan are maternal siblings, as both are out of Ansata Nefer Isis (Prince Fa Moniet x Ansata Nefertiti), which explains the similarity between both horses.

Mountaser Laffan is a son of the mare, Authentic Monisa, who is a daughter of Monisa Halima (*Ansata Ibn Halima x AK Monisa Moniet) by Nabeel II (Maysoun x AK Bint Nabilahh). What's interesting about Mountaser, beyond his maternal grandam, Monisa Halima, who is significantly influenced by the Moniet El Nefous bloodline, further intensifies this bloodline through Nabeel II (AK Bint Nabilahh is a daughter of *Ibn Moniet El Nefous), Prince Fa Moniet (Fa Moniet is a daughter of *Ibn Moniet El Nefous) and Ansata Nile Jewel (her sire, *Morafic, is a grandson of Moniet El Nefous). Of the 32 lines that make up the 6th generation (great-great grandparents), almost half or 14 lines, trace back to Moniet El Nefous, including the tail female line. Also, on a smaller scale (as compared to Moniet El Nefous) Ansata Nile Echo, through his sire, Ansata Hejazi, also intensifies the line of Ansata Halim Shah to complement with Maysoun, also a son of Ansata Halim Shah.

Congratulations to the breeders and owners of these three magnificent stallions. We are separated by thousands of miles and more than likely, will never meet, and yet, your horses bring joy and happiness into the lives of other like-minded people, teaching us how much more we have in common, despite the distance which separates us.
