Ansata Queen Nefr (Prince Fa Moniet x Ansata Nefertiti) as photographed by Judith Forbis, her breeder |
Foaled in 1993, Ansata Queen Nefr was a world traveler, making her way to the Netherlands, enjoying a show career, even winning a Reserve Championship at the Egyptian Classic, held within the Tilburg Show, before moving to Germany and then, to the land of her ancestors and her forever home, where she was loved and cherished for the rest of her life at El Gabry Stud in Egypt. How fortunate to be blessed with this mare's presence!
Her dam, Ansata Nefertiti (Ansata Halim Shah x Ansata Sudarra) was one of four full siblings produced by Ansata Sudarra, including the King of Kuwait, Ansata Hejazi, as well as the dam of Ansata Sinan, Ansata Nefara. I found it interesting that her dam's breeding history would be repeated by her daughter, as Ansata Nefertiti also produced 3 full siblings, this time by Prince Fa Moniet: Ansata Nefer Isis, Ansata Queen Nefer and Ansata Nefer. Like her dam and granddam, Ansata Queen Nefer was prolific in her breeding career too, producing colt foals by Abbas Pasha I and Ashhal Al Rayyan for Al Qusar Stud, as well as a number of fillies sired by a variety of stallions like Teymur B, Tarif El Gabry, Jamil Al Rayyan, Gamil Sakr, Taymour Sakr, Salaa El Dine, Gamil Al Rayyan, all at El Gabry.
As important as her career in the show ring was, and despite her star status as a broodmatron for El Gabry, that's not the focus of this blog today. Rather, this is about the individual, whose unique photo is more like a visual celebration of a popular breed term, "tent horse." That is, an Arabian horse whose heritage includes many years of living in close proximity with human beings. Ansata Queen Nefer's body language, the inquisitive expression, the focused gaze, the direction of her ears, the kind, soft energy radiating from her eyes speaks of the esteem she holds for the human on the other side of the camera, who I believe is Judith Forbis. It's what Carl Raswan once wrote of a spiritual connection, a common thread of affection that is shared between species,
"the mare that lives under divine orders, as a mute and obedient companion of man, has an insight into the mind of her master whom she may even prefer to her own kind."
Sometimes, a photo just grabs your attention and try as you may, you are unable to think of anything else. You turn the page or even, close the book and walk away, only to find that the image continues to burn in your subconscious, upon your heart and mind. Judith Forbis' book about *Ansata Bint Bukra, Born to Reign, is one of my new favorites and includes many photos that I have not seen before, like the above photo of Ansata Queen Nefer (there's a black and white version in Authentic Arabian Bloodstock II). There are so many beautiful mares pictured in the book, that it is challenging to choose one or two horses over all the others, however, it is Ansata Queen Nefr who sets my mind to dream and wonder of a horse who is as desirous of you, as you are of her. Her devotion to her mistress is captured forevermore.
Once upon a time, Ansata Queen Nefer lived, inspiring all with the raging fire of her inner beauty. Her photo remains as proof of that. It's a rare magical moment, frozen in time.
***Born to Reign, written by Judith Forbis and published by Ansata Publications, 2019, is the life story of a mare, whose continuing influence in the breed is legendary. You will be overwhelmed as you consider the multiple branches of this dynamic mare family. I recommend it!****
